London, June 5th 2006 (SIGNIS): The BBC’s World Service reporter, Ian Hardy has compiled a fascinating report on the way some Christian groups have started to produce their own video games.

"Over the years the video games industry having created an arsenal of knives guns and bombs has taken some incoming fire of its own. Hidden sex scenes and over the top violence have raised eyebrows from all parts of US society. But ... one group has capitalised on the bad news".

"Blood, guts, blood and more guts - the video game landscape looks gratuitously gory with no end in sight. But some people on the fringes of the gaming world want to offer something different - a spiritual experience.

Scott Scholler, Christian Game Developers Foundation: "Many parents, many families, are not really aware of the content of video games, what resources are out there to guide them in their choice of video games, and the fact that there is a small but growing community of Christian and family-friendly video game developers."

There have been several titles already released with a Christian theme, mostly for the PC platform because development costs are significantly lower for PC games than for console games. But teenagers are a tough audience to please, even those who attend church regularly. And most of us can spot a religious pitch a mile away. The advice to game developers is to tread carefully...."
